… well almost, since I took these photos on August 19, one day before the actual blue moon appearing. But I was awe-struck just the same. Knowing nothing about the astronomical phases at that time except simply captivated by the beauty of the rising moon while birding, I took these photos.
Not until the next night did I learn about the Blue Moon, elated that I had caught the moonrise serendipitously the day before. Here’s a shortened sequence:
Once in a blue moon, I can get the date right. But I’m happy just the same to have hit it a day early out of the blue. Why, the next night was cloudy. So this is a blue moon for me.

I didn’t expect I could just use my birding camera to shoot the moon. Funny that we can see the features in a bright late afternoon sky but can’t in the night sky.

My favorite photo’s the top one. If I understand it properly, the reason the features are more easily photographed that time of day is that there’s less contrast between the moon and the sky. At night, when it’s a bright moon and a very dark sky, you have to adjust for the contrast with settings, lenses, etc. But that’s getting way out of my comfort zone!
You’ll have plenty of time to practice your moon shots. The next one isn’t until July of 2015! Until then, you can admire these – they’re all splendid.

The first one is purely by chance that I looked up and saw those clouds and the moon. Very beautiful. I won’t do much to prepare for the next one though, July 2015. The serendipity makes it more fun. But… maybe good reason for a lens upgrade. 😉

I didn’t do anything… just point and shoot with the auto setting on my Nikon 5100. I trust the camera’s eye more than my own. 😉

Huh. When I do that, I get a round bright glow that could be a street light…. granted, my lenses have been on the short side. But next full moon, maybe I’ll give my 70-300mm a go. Anyway, well done to you and your 5100!

Auto ‘landscape’ setting. So I guess the camera knew how to adjust. Mine was a 55-200 mm lens. The Nikor 70-300 mm is on my Christmas wish list. I’m sure your new camera and your macro lens have served you real well with close-up’s.

Lovely Arti! I love moonrise. I have fond memories from when I was a kid and the family would be camping in the desert and we’d sit out and watch the moon rise. It looked so impossibly huge as it came up over the desert horizon, a trick of air and light, and the higher it got the smaller it would get. Thanks for reminding me about that!

You know, when I watched Wes Anderson’s movie Moonrise Kingdom, I had trouble imagining what a moonrise looked like. But here I saw it clearly… the higher it rose, the smaller and rounder and more distinct it got, ending with a bright ball in the night sky. Glad you love the moon and the pics. 😉

Well… sort of seems appropriate for me to drop in on this post, since my presence within the blogging world of late has been about as elusive as a blue moon…
First… I hope all things with you and your world are well.
Second… and speaking of things ‘blue,’ I’m seeking you out to see if you’ve seen Woody’s latest film — “Blue Jasmine?” I left the theater yesterday…. thinking…,surely Cate Blanchette will receive a nod from Oscar for her fine (how inadequate are adjectives, to describe what I watched) performance. Still thinking about it… and I’m thinking I’d like to see it again.
It’s been a busy summer of getting things done on home and garden… trying to create a little beauty in everyday life. I’ve slipped away a few times to watch a few other fine films — “The Way, Way Back,” “Mud,” and thanks to my two granddaughters, “Epic.” But I’ve read very little… other than finishing a single volume of Proust, I’ve read one novel — “The Interestings” — which was so good, I’m hanging on to it for another read someday.
I will re-read Proust also.. though Ill wait to immerse myself in his world come winter. Certain themes from part one of his story, still simmer in my mind. Will be good to re-read part one… and move on to part two and who knows how many more. Thanks for inviting me to read part one… don’t think I ever would have without you.

Glad to hear from you again! And yes, while you were commenting, I was writing up a review of Blue Jasmine. I’ve seen it twice in one week. Like you, I’m most impressed by Cate Blanchett’s performance, and happy to see Woody Allen’s talents and energy have not faded at 77.
I haven’t been reading much this summer, rather, have been catching up with a lot of old classic films, and yes, A Streetcar Named Desire being one of them. Still hope to start Proust’s second volume of In Search of Lost Time. Haven’t found the time yet. And… come September I’ll be heading to TIFF in Toronto 😉
