The June flood in Southern Alberta has turned out to be the costliest natural disaster in Canadian history according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
To continue with the Wabi-Sabi idea, here is another set of photos. Again, in the midst of ruins, weeks after the flood, I took in these sights…
Along the debris-filled, muddy shore of the river:
A sandpiper lightly skimmed over:
A butterfly playing in the sand:
Some creative souls had even left impromptu monuments:
A tribute to quiet beauty among torrents of destruction.
Wabi-sabi… beauty in ruins.

Love, love, love the rock tribute. It’s a strange beauty. But it is beauty. And how I love your birds…

I have a feeling you included the green leaf in the first photo purposefully. It’s a beautiful touch. The rock cairns are wonderful, too. The impulse to stack rocks, whether as a wilderness trail marker or just for simple beauty, seems to be deeply embedded.
And the butterflies are so pretty! I read somewhere that they adore nice, wet places. I’ll sometimes see them even on the Gulf beaches. I think they may live among the flower-covered dunes, but they come down to the shore’s edge and just hang out. ๐

Linda,
Ha, thanks for noticing the green leaf. I didn’t. ๐ Come to think of it, yes, it does look like one of those pics where a spot of colour is embedded in a b/w photo.
I wonder what’s fall like in the Gulf. Or, do you have fall at all? I saw the first formation of geese in the sky today. And it’s been quite chilly. For us, we’re well into fall already.

Pretty shots… So poetic! I think the last one is my favourite. Have you seen the artwork of Andy Goldsworthy? Makes me think of that…
I went out and bought Leonard Koren’s book “Wabi Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers”. I love this concept! I think it is worthy of a regular exploration!

Michelle,
Interesting book that must be. Glad you’re exploring more about the idea. I await your sharing in your artwork and your blog after you’ve read it. Truth is, my knowledge of wabi-sabi is only ‘Wikipedia deep’. But, reading Kawabata’s novels during Japanese Lit. Challenge had prepared me, and of course, that TIME mag article on how the filmmakers ‘wabi-sabi everything.’ ๐
