Memorable Movie Love Quotes

The following is my Valentine post back in 2008 and an update after Downton. Re-posting here today for reminiscence. For several years, this post held the highest view records on my blog. I’d received 60+ comments suggesting more quotes. I regret I don’t have the plugin to copy them all here. But I’m sure we can start anew and update with fresh ones. ย You’re welcome to add your fave movie love quote in a comment.

To celebrate Valentineโ€™s Day, Iโ€™ve compiled a list of memorable quotes from movies, all on the theme of love. All come from movies Iโ€™ve seen, some Iโ€™ve reviewed on this Blog (click on title to my review). They represent dialogues that have stirred some ripples in one small heart. And loveโ€ฆbeing a many splendid thing, embraces all kinds of human relationships, and transcends cultures and boundaries.
.

Hereโ€™s Artiโ€™s Collection of Memorable Movie Love Quotes:

  • Medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. โ€” Dead Poets Society
  • The greatest thing youโ€™ll ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return. โ€” Moulin Rouge
  • The things that people in love do to each other they remember, and if they stay together itโ€™s not because they forget, itโ€™s because they forgive. โ€” Indecent Proposal
  • I like you very much. Just as you are. โ€” Bridget Jonesโ€™s Diary
Bridget Jones' Diary
.
  • When the planes hit the twin towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge โ€” they were all messages of love. โ€” Love Actually
  • Maybe it is our imperfections which make us so perfect for one another. โ€” Emma
  • And now, Iโ€™m backโ€ฆand Iโ€™ve lost her all over again. Iโ€™m so sad that I donโ€™t have Kelly. But Iโ€™m so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now. I gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring? โ€”Castaway
  • I donโ€™t believe in quantum physics when it comes to matter of the heart. โ€” Bull Durham
.
.
  • Shoot me. Thereโ€™s no greater glory than to die for love. โ€” Love in the Time of Cholera
  • I need to feel strongly, to love and to admire, just as desperately as I need to breathe. โ€” The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
  • For you, a thousand times over. โ€” The Kite Runner
  • Come backโ€ฆCome back to me. โ€” Atonement
  • Natalie: ย Do you believe in love at first sight?
John: ย Yes I do. Saves a lot of time. โ€” The Stickup

While a few are lucky enough to save time and escape the torments of love by creating a lasting flame from the first spark, some have to go through tumultuous pining, even the arduous and humbling experience of transforming oneself to gain requited love. And who, other than the following, epitomizes such kind of yearning:

Love Quotes From Downton Abbey:

โ€œI love you Mr. Bates. I know itโ€™s not ladylike to say it, but Iโ€™m not a lady and I donโ€™t pretend to be.โ€ ย โ€” Anna, S1E5

โ€œIโ€™m not a romanticโ€ฆ But even I concede that the heart does not exist solely for the purpose of pumping blood.โ€ Violet Crawley, S2E2

โ€œIโ€™d rather have the right man, than the right wedding.โ€ โ€” Anna, S2E5

  1. Thank you, Arti! I hadn’t seen these before, so I’m very glad you re-posted. You made me remember that I had written down some memorable lines from Bollywood movies I saw recently. Even though they were said or sung in love songs, none of them is actually of a genre to fit here, so I will restrain myself ๐Ÿ™‚ . Now I will go and look at your serious commenters’ contributions.

  2. I can’t remember any really – except some of those you’ve listed here I remember as soon as I read them of course. But, I do remember the very famous now rather cliched one “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” from Love Story. (But I bet that’s in your 60 comments on our original post?)

    1. Yes WG, I remember that one well. Read the book as a teenager and went to see the movie with school friends only to be denied entry as it had a ‘mature’ rating. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ That sounds like another century ago.
