What If… A Northern Nativity

The late Canadian artist William Kurelek embraced a nativity that’s beyond time and culture. In his children book A Northern Nativity, he envisioned through a little Prairie boy’s dreams the various scenarios: what if Christ was born in the land of deep snow in an Inuit community, or what if Mary and Joseph, homeless on our streets, had to take shelter in a soup kitchen, what if… Would we have noticed? Would we even care?

This is a moving video clip on the paintings in Kurelek’s children book A Northern Nativity, accompanied by Chris de Burgh’s touching piano music “When Winter Comes”.

And to All, A Merry Christmas!

  1. This is breathtaking in so many ways. I love, first of all, the way it makes an “old” story fresh by letting me look at it through new eyes. I also love the peacefulness, and the artwork, and the accompanying music. So lovely, and thanks for sharing, Arti.

I hope to show it to my family later tonight when they come for dinner and presents.

May all God’s blessings rest on you this Christmas and New Year 2012. XO

    jeanie,

Kurelek’s A Northern Nativity was recommended to me by an artist friend of mine. I was very glad to find the YouTube clip. After watching it, I bought the music from iTune right away. 😉

  7. What if – sometimes I think about this too – what if Jesus was back here talking to the ”Tea Party” that wishes healthcare was stopped for poor people – would they listen?

I hope your Christmas was fun and that your New Year will be joyful.

    Vagabonde,

Even more interesting scenario. If everyone lives as if Jesus were present among them that would already by a better world.
Have a bright New Year! All the best in 2012!

  8. Such a lovely video, Arti. Since I’m stretching things a bit and celebrating the full twelve days of Christmas this year, it’s a perfect addition, which I’ll share with others.

Isn’t it marvelous what we can find, and share? I wonder how things would have gone if the shepherds were on facebook and the Magi loved to tweet? 😉

    Linda,

The whole world would have seen the Nativity then. You know, this kind of scenarios not only can raise social consciousness, but can also stimulate some creative works I suppose, a short story? or even a screenplay?

Good to hear from you again. Hope you had a peaceful Christmas. And now may I wish you a Happy New Year and All the Best in 2012!
